Role
Interior Architect
The Kahveli lunch restaurant brings traditional Karelian food culture into the present day. The aim of the interior design was to interpret Karelian tradition in a modern way and to express the rich food culture with the dignity it deserves.
The interior design combines a modern interpretation with the architecture of the building, which was constructed in 1913, and Karelian tradition. The restaurant encourages communal dining and its special feature is the long farmhouse tables where diners use a shared embroidered käspaikka.
At Karelian feast tables, a long, even three- to four-meter-long embroidered towel was placed on the diners' laps, which they used to wipe their mouths and hands while eating. The embroidered symbols were believed to bring good luck and prosperity to the household.
